Moving to Qatar

It is not surprising that many Brits consider relocating to Qatar. It has been ranked the wealthiest country in the world and despite being an Islamic country it is relatively forward thinking in terms of equal opportunities for men and women; indeed women have the right to vote and run for public office, they can drive without having to have a male companion with them, and several women hold prestigious roles within central government.

There are approximately 14,000 British citizens living in Qatar, and an additional 40,000 visit each year. Most British residents moved to Qatar for the purposes of their work – Qatar is rich in oil and natural gas and the oil industry is the country’s number one source of income, with many international oil companies having offices in the capital city Doha.

Qatari work permits are available to those considering a move to the country, and these work permits are extended to include an applicant’s spouse and children. There are several things which need to be taken into consideration when applying for a work permit – the main one being that applicants must undergo a full health screening, including chest x-ray and blood tests, before the permit can be granted. A work visa has to be given approval by the Ministry of the Interior before it is finally granted.

Once a work visa has been issued expats are unable to leave the country without gaining permission in writing from their employer, and in the event that an employee wishes to change their job they must receive a No Objection Certificate from their current employer. It should be noted though that an employer is under no obligation to issue this certificate. Without it the employee will have to leave the country and is unable to apply for re-entry for a further two years.

Qatar’s capital city, Doha, is home to the largest amount of British expats. The cost of real estate in Doha is the highest in the world and as such most people choose to rent their homes rather than buy.

The city is an excellent place for families to live, education is rated highly here and there are many renowned international schools available. Culture is starting to become more prominent and the city boasts several festivals every year, including the Doha Tribeca Film Festival which is held each October.
