Removals and Shipping to Malaysia

Located in Southeast Asia Malaysia has held strong ties with the UK for many years, having been under British rule from the mid 1800’s through to its independence in 1963. The country’s political and legal systems have many similarities to that in Britain. Relationships with the UK remain friendly and the country proves to be a popular draw for Brits looking to move to the region for work or retirement.

Permanent residency visas (MM2H Programme Visas) are normally granted for a period of ten years on condition that the applicant meets certain strict criteria. Applicants can only apply if they either have a high net worth (a minimum of US$2 million) which is deposited in a Malaysian bank, are considered to be world class experts in their chosen industry, have a highly skilled occupation or are a spouse or dependant of a Malaysian citizen.

Applicants must be able to prove that they have assets of at least MYR 500,000 (approx. £100,000) with an additional offshore income of MYR 10,000 (£2000) per month. In addition to this applicants must keep a minimum of MYR 150,000 (£30,000) in a Malaysian bank account for the duration of their residency. For those over 50 and planning to retire they must open a fixed deposit account maintaining a minimum of MYR 150,000 and an additional bank account with a minimum of MYR 100,000 (£20,000) as part of the MM2H Programme. Additionally they must be able to show evidence of a pension fund which provides them with a minimum income of MYR 10,000 per month.

Kuala Lumpur, the nation’s capital, is the economic, financial and cultural centre of Malaysia with many Brits living here due to their work within the banking and insurance sectors. Brits looking for a suitable area of Kuala Lumpur to move to, particularly if they have children of school age, should consider the Subang Jaya district, as it is home to many highly rated international schools.

The Bukit Bintang district is the entertainment hub, with a wide range of restaurants, bars and shopping malls. The KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) is home to the main financial industries – it’s here that you will find the famous Petronas Towers. Traditional Malaysian shops can be found to the north of the city centre in the Tuanka Abdul Rahman district, locally known as Little India. There is a bustling Chinese community in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Street is home to the Chinatown district.
