Relocation and Tourist Information for Thailand
Formerly known as Siam, the Kingdom of Thailand is located in Southeast Asia. It has been a popular tourist destination for many years, with many Brits choosing a stopover in the country before heading to Australia as part of a gap year tour.
The country appeals to all types, from those who love the hustle and bustle of Bangkok through to those looking for relaxation in one of the many coastal towns. There are a high amount of British expatriates in the country, many relocating to Thailand for their work or to retire.
There a several different visa options available to those looking into moving to Thailand, and it is important that you are in possession of the correct one before you enter the country. The Non-Immigrant B Visa is for those wishing to work in the country, or to set up a new business there. Once you have arranged your UK removals to Thailand and arrived in the country you must also apply for a work permit – to obtain this you have to supply several different types of identification and be able to prove that any work you plan on doing cannot be done by a Thai national. Additionally, you will need to provide a medical certificate to show that you are in good health.
The Non-Immigrant O Visa is for people who are moving to Thailand to retire. This visa is only issued to people over 50 years old and who can prove that they have an annual income of THB 65,000 or a total bank balance of at least THB 800,000. The Thai immigration authorities may request that this bank balance is transferred to a Thai bank.
Obtaining permanent residency in Thailand can be quite difficult; they have strict rules and procedures which must be followed. Only 100 people from each country are given permanent residency status each year, and the number of applicants is always high. In addition to this applications are only processed between October and November – it is advisable to submit your application to the Immigration Department as early as possible to be in with the best chance of being granted permanent residency.

There are several large British expat groups dotted around the country; however the biggest of these is located in the nation’s capital city, Bangkok. Locally known as Krung Thep (City of Angels) it is a very busy city where local culture and tradition merge with modern developments and industry. While tourism plays a major role in the economy here, income is also generated from the financial market, with the headquarters of all of Thailand’s national banks being based in the city, in addition to several international banking organisations.
