Information on Relocating to Singapore

Singapore has been a popular destination for British expats for many years. Until 1963 it had been under British rule for 124 years, since its founding in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post for the East India Company. Even though it no longer forms part of the British Overseas Territories it still retains many influences from its time under British rule, including its parliamentary system.

It is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with its main source of income coming from the financial sector, casinos, exports, tourism and the oil industry. It is for employment within these industries that many Brits consider relocating to Singapore. The Singapore Government encourages foreign nationals to come and work within the country, and there are several different types of visa available to prospective applicants.

The S-Pass visa is for individuals classed as having middle level skills. The P & Q Pass visas are for those with a higher level of skill including managers, executives and specialists in their field. The R-Pass visa is for those individuals whose skill level is considered to be lower than those in receipt of the S-Pass Visa. Applicants who intend to set up a business within Singapore can apply for the EntrePass Visa, which is specifically aimed at entrepreneurs.

Once an applicant has been in Singapore for several years they can apply for Permanent Residency, or even full Citizenship. It should be noted that if a man has been granted permanent residency or citizenship and are between the ages of 16 and 50 there is the possibility that they will be required to do two years, full time, National Service and an additional 40 days of service each year until they are 50.

Singapore truly is a melting pot of different nationalities, and as such there are a whole host of different cultural options available. Food in Singapore is excellent and the types of dishes available are good indication of how culturally diverse the country is.

Shopping is sometimes jokingly referred to as a national pastime and there are many shopping malls and designer boutiques. The arts are becoming more prominent; the government encourages art groups and has been actively promoting the country’s art scene in recent years, including theatre, comedy and music events. The country is small in size and congestion from cars has been a problem, as such the government has invested a great deal of money into improving the country’s public transport in an effort to make it a first class system that all citizens would want to use.
