Information on Relocating to Chile

Chile is one of two South American countries not have a border with Brazil. It has an incredibly varied climate – from the exceptionally arid north of the country, where the world’s driest desert, the Atacama is located, a Mediterranean climate in the centre of the country and through to the south where the cooler Oceanic climate leads to glaciers. It has one of the most stable economies of any South American nation and incredibly strong ties with foreign relations, including the UK, and as such it is relatively easy to arrange UK removals to Chile and be granted a work permit or even residency.

When relocating to Chile work visas are granted if you can show that you have a job offer from a local company. It is not essential to have this visa in place prior to moving to Chile, nor is it essential to have an offer of employment prior to entry either – it can be obtained after arrival. Other visas available include the Business Visa, Retiree Visa and Rentista Visa. With the Retiree and Rentista visas you must be able to show that you have enough funds to live on which are equivalent to, or above, the minimum wage. Permanent residency must be applied for once you have resided in Chile for three years.

The largest British expat community is located in the country’s capital city, Santiago. Santiago is deeply modernised city, mainly in thanks to its strong economy. It has a European atmosphere, with many European influences to be found in its architectural style, in part due to its time under Spanish rule.

It is home to Chile’s financial centre, with a large area of the city comprising of modern skyscrapers housing several international banking organisations. There are many high end shopping malls dotted around the city, housing everything from high street brands, designer boutiques, restaurants, bars and entertainment complexes.

In addition to the malls there are several streets dedicated to designer boutiques, Alonso de Cordova in particular is often seen as an equal to Los Angeles’ Rodeo Drive. Rich in culture, music is incredibly popular in Santiago, in particular Jazz. There are several internationally renowned jazz clubs including El Perseguidor and Club de Jazz de Santiago, which is held in as high regard as Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club is in the UK. If Jazz is not your preference there are many other live music venues, hosting everything from Rock through to Classical music. The Lollapalooza Rock Festival also comes to Santiago annually.
