Moving to India
India is the second most populated country in the world and one of the fastest growing economies. While several regions in the country have seen considerable political unrest in recent years there are many areas where, thanks to tourism and industry, several expat communities are emerging, either through Brits moving to the country due to blood ties or for their employment.
Visas are required in order to enter India, regardless of it being for business or pleasure. It is important that if one is moving to India for business that they acquire the correct type of visa, either the business visa or the employment visa. If the wrong type of visa is applied for then it is highly possible that once inside the country you will be told leave and re-apply. These visas cannot be exchanged for the correct type whilst inside the country.
A business visa is issued to those who meet strict criteria including being of good financial standing, and has expertise within the business sector they plan to invest and work in. It is aimed at those who wish to better India’s economy by either setting up a business within the country, setting up trade relations between their existing business and companies already in India or for those coming to the country with the intention of hiring Indian manpower. A business visa can be granted for periods of up to five years.
An employment visa is issued to those coming to work in India as an employee. They must be able to prove that there are no qualified Indian people available to take on the role, and that they are qualified and skilled in the role.
An employment visa is valid for a maximum of five years before it has to be re-applied for. Once an employment visa has been granted the individual cannot change their job role or employer without leaving the country and re-applying for a new visa.

Of the many expat communities within India the largest can be found in Mumbai. With a population of over 20 million Mumbai is the busiest and richest city in India. It has a considerably higher standard of living compared to other cities in the country, and thanks to old colonial ties with the UK, has quite a British feel due to the architectural style of many of the buildings. It is the entertainment hub of India and the birth place of the Indian cinema style more commonly known as Bollywood. There are several festivals held annually, including the Banganga Music Festival which is held in January and the Elephanta Festival, held each February.
