Britain has had a long and rich relationship with Canada. Our Queen is also their head of state and their parliamentary system draws many similarities to our own. As such it is not surprising to learn that many Brits consider relocating to Canada for either for employment or to retire. Here, then, are a few essential facts everyone should know about Canada.

Canada is comprised of ten provinces and three territories. At 3,854,085 square miles it is the second largest country in the world by land size, and has a population of approximately 35 million people. Its capital city, Ottawa, is located in the province of Ontario. Ottawa has a high concentration of expats from all the world – approximately 20% of the population is made up of foreign migrants.

Canada has two official languages – Canadian English and Canadian French. The majority of those speaking Canadian French are of French descent and primarily live in the province of Quebec.

Culturally, Canada draws many influences from its English, French and Aboriginal heritage. Art and music in particular have strong British and French influences, and several of their most popular music artists have achieved international fame, including Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion and AlanisMorissette.

Sports are extremely popular in Canada; their national sports are Ice Hockey and Lacrosse. Additionally Football is popular, and the country has its own professional league – The Canadian Football League. It should be noted however that Canadian football is more similar to the game played by its American neighbours, rather than the British version.

Canada considers itself to be a multi-national country and welcomes more than 250,000 immigrants each year.
