Removals and Shipping to Turkey
Turkey has long been a popular holiday destination for people in the UK, so it will come as no surprise that it is also a popular retirement destination as well, partly due to the reasonably low cost of living, as well as the excellent weather that the country enjoys year-round. Its cities are also becoming boom areas for technology and business, and its links with the Middle East make it an ideal base for those emigrating for work opportunities.
Turkey is not yet a full member of the European Union so entry into the country will require that you obtain a visa. A standard tourist visa lasts for 90 days, and anyone wishing to move to Turkey on a permanent basis will need to obtain the correct type. There are several types of visa available, the two main ones being the Residence Visa (suitable for those also looking to set up a business in Turkey) and the Work Visa.
A Residence Visa can be obtained whilst in Turkey by applying at the local police headquarters before the standard 90 day visitor visa expires. For people wishing to have a Residence Visa or a Work Visa in place prior to arrival in the country, an application must be completed and submitted to the Turkish consulate in London at least 8 weeks prior to departure.

Moving to Turkey From the UK
There are several blossoming expat communities in Turkey including:
Ankara – Home to the Turkish Government, Turkey’s capital city is an important industrial and commercial centre. It also has good transport links to the rest of country – Ankara Central Station is a major rail hub and flight times from Esenboga International Airport to London are approximately 3.5 hours.
Istanbul – The largest city in Turkey, Istanbul is the country’s primary financial, economic and cultural centre, as well as the third largest city in Europe in terms of resident numbers. It has excellent transport links back to the UK by air, or for those wanting a more opulent journey the Orient Express runs from the Istanbul Sirkeci Terminal. The city is well known for its museums and arts festivals. It is also home to many major sporting events and is currently bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
Bodrum – A port city on the South western coast steeped in history, Bodrum is a popular tourist destination with many expats choosing to move here after visiting on holiday. Bodrum benefits from a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and has a vibrant tourist trade. The city hosts several cultural festivals each year within the grounds of Bodrum castle.
Izmir – Known as the ‘Pearl of the Aegean’, Izmir is the third most populated city in Turkey and is located on the western side of the country, lying at the head of a gulf leading to the Mediterranean sea. Turkey’s main port for exports is situated here and the regional economy is seeing a boom, thanks in part to the growing number of large companies setting up in the area. The city is widely regarded as one the most progressive and forward thinking locations in the country, with both visitor and expat numbers increasing yearly. The city hosts many cultural festivals throughout the year, the biggest being the International Arts Festival throughout June and July.
