Removals to Switzerland from the UK
Famed for its beautiful scenery and neutrality in political situations, Switzerland is a landlocked country, bordered by France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union and only became a member of the United Nations in 2002. It is considered to be the wealthiest country in the world and the Swiss Franc is one of the strongest currencies. Its economy has also been ranked as the most competitive in the world and the EU has labelled Switzerland “Europe’s Most Innovative Country”. These are just some of the many factors that make it such a popular choice for people when considering a move abroad for employment, study or to retire and arrange removals to Switzerland.
Despite not being a member of the European Union, Switzerland allows visitors from EU countries to enter its borders without the need of a visa. However, should a visitor wish to reside in the country for more than 90 days they are required to obtain a residence permit. There are a variety of residence permits available, depending on the person’s nationality and the reason for their stay in the country. These permits can be obtained from the Cantonal Migration Office (Migrationsamt/Office Cantonale des Etrangers) in the locality where the person is residing. Additionally, all arrivals into the country must attend the Cantonal Resident Registration Office within the first eight days of their arrival to notify of their intention to reside in the country.

There are many burgeoning expat communities in Switzerland and many are made up of business professionals who now live in the country for employment reasons. Three of the most popular locations for expats to reside are Bern, Zurich and Geneva, all of which have a rich economy and cultural history.
Bern – Switzerland’s Federal City, the medieval old town centre of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Foreign nationals make up just below 25% of Bern’s population. Home to the National Parliament, the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus) is one of the many famous buildings and museums that can be visited in the city. The city boasts numerous top class theatres and holds several well-known cultural festivals each year. With all this in mind it is easy to see why Bern was ranked within the top ten cities for best quality of life in 2010.
Zurich – Located in central Switzerland, Zurich is the country’s largest city. The city is as highly regarded for its research facilities as it is for its financial institutions (it is home to the Swiss Stock Exchange) and a large number of expats in the city work within these industries. Culturally, Zurich is home to two world famous museums: the Swiss National Museum and the Kunsthaus art gallery. Additionally, it is home to a world class symphony orchestra and hosts several important cultural festivals each year, including the world famous Zurich International Film Festival.
With its high quality of life it is easy to see why a move to Switzerland appeals to so many people.
