Removals to Portugal
With its warm sunny weather, golden beaches, relaxed atmosphere and excellent cuisine, Portugal has been a popular tourist destination for many years. In fact, each year it is in the top 20 most visited countries in the world. It’s easy to see why so many people choose to emigrate here and that number keeps growing. There has been a 77% increase in Brits moving to Portugal and requiring the services of companies such as Fox Moving & Storage for international removals to Portugal in the last 10 years alone.
Moving to Portugal from the UK is a relatively simple process; being part of the European Union there are no strict visa requirements in order to gain entry to the country. However, it is worth noting that for people wishing to take up permanent residency within Portugal they should ensure that they have all their legal documentation, such as passport, driving license, bank account and insurances in place and up-to-date.
People wishing to live and work in Portugal for more than six months will need to apply for a residency card (Autorização de Residência). Applications for a residency card need to be made with the Portuguese Immigration Service (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) office, which is located in the chosen region of residency. Residency cards can be temporary or permanent – a temporary card is valid for one year and can be renewed twice. A permanent residency card is valid for those who have legally lived in Portugal for five years and must be renewed every five years.

There is a thriving expat community in Portugal, both from those who are in the country to work and those who have moved to the region to retire. For retirees, the Algarve region and Madeira are the most popular expat locations in which to reside. However, some of the major cities are also gaining in popularity, including:
Lisbon – Portugal’s capital and its largest city. The expat community here is made up of both retirees and those who have emigrated for work. It is an important and thriving location for education, finance, commerce, international trade, the arts, media and entertainment. It has a rich cultural element, with many museums and theatres. Cultural festivals are held here annually, including film festivals and the world famous Rock in Rio music festival.
Porto – Portugal’s second largest city and home to the internationally renowned dessert wine, Porto was voted the 4th best value destination in 2012 by the highly regarded Lonely Planet travel site. With its warm Mediterranean weather, excellent cultural events and good economic climate, it is easy to see why Porto is gaining in popularity for many people choosing to immigrate to Portugal.
