With its high temperate climate, internationally renowned cuisine, rich cultural history and a language that is considered to be the most romantic in the world, it is easy to see why so many people from the United Kingdom are choosing to immigrate and arrange international removals to Italy. It is only in recent years that the country has seen an increase in migrants coming into the country and people from the UK choosing to move over are primarily moving to Italy for study purposes or to retire. However, there are several blossoming expat communities made up of Brits moving here to work within the country.
Moving to Italy
Moving to Italy requires no visa as it is part of the European Union. However, for those wishing to permanently reside in the country it is important to be aware of certain forms and permits that one might need to obtain.
Firstly, it is important that you register your intention to reside in the country at the Attestazione di Iscrizione Anagrafica (the Municipal Registry Office). When registering, you must have documentation to prove that you are in the country to either work, live or study. You must also show that you have the relevant health insurance and sufficient financial means to reside in Italy. A certificate of registration is required if you intend to make certain transactions in Italy, such as buying a car.
EU nationals residing in Italy for a period of more than five years will be required to obtain a Long Term Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno per Soggiornanti di Lungo Periodo). When applying for this permit you must submit a copy of your income tax statement in order to prove that you are in receipt of a minimum income that is higher than the standard social allowance.

With this in mind, it is a good idea to try and meet up with like-minded individuals or fellow Brits who know the area well. There are several great websites that are purely dedicated to the expat community; Internations.org and angloinfo.com are just two of them. Sites such as these regularly arrange get-togethers so that newcomers can become acquainted with fellow expats and forge future friendships. For those wanting to move to an area where there is a good expat community Rome, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Naples and Turin are all seeing an increase in Brits residing in these locations.
