Removals and Shipping to Belgium

Despite being small in terms of landmass, Belgium has made a huge impact upon the world. It is one the founding members of the European Union, with the headquarters of the EU located in Brussels, as are the headquarters of NATO and several other major international organisations. It is partly for this reason that there is a blossoming British expat community within the country, as even though it is possible to commute daily to and from the UK quite easily, many choose to reside here permanently for the employment opportunities and will require removals to Belgium.

As with all other EU members, there are no visa requirements for those EU citizens choosing to move to Belgium. However, it should be noted that once in the country one should familiarise themselves with residency procedures and obtain any residency permits that are needed mainly: registering your intention to reside in the country within eight days of arrival and obtaining an Identity card (these must be carried at all times by anyone over the age of 15).

Removals to Belgium

There are several towns and cities in Belgium which have growing expat communities. For those wishing to meet up with fellow Brits and unsure where to start using one of the many expat websites that are available can help, two of these include angloinfo.com and internations.org. For those working in large international organisations there might be a community noticeboard listing expat get-togethers for people. Additionally, local newspapers might have listings for weekly or monthly meet ups. However, one of the best ways to meet fellow Brits or indeed Belgian nationals is to just get out and about and explore your new city. Three of the best cities to explore are Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

Brussels – Capital city and home to many major international political organisations, Brussels is quite the melting pot of nationalities, with at least 70,000 individuals from around the world living there. In addition to its political and legal institutions, Brussels is famed for its cultural heritage. Buildings and architecture in Brussels range from the medieval Grand Palace through to the futuristic Atomium, which was built to celebrate the 1958 World’s Fair. Brussels has strong ties with the arts world; many internationally renowned artists, including Renee Magritte, either studied or lived here, and there are several excellent museums to visit. Brussels is also renowned for its food and drink and there are at least 1800 bars and restaurants to choose from.

Antwerp – Home to Europe’s second largest port and the second largest petrochemical cluster in the world, Antwerp’s main economy comes from heavy industry. In addition, Antwerp has a strong diamond trade; with over 12,000 people working in this industry, it is largest diamond centre in the world. Culturally Antwerp is famed for its art; both Rubens and Van Dyck were part of the Antwerp school of painting and there are many highly regarded museums to visit. More recently it has become a leading centre of fashion, with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts considered to be one of the best fashion schools in Europe.

Ghent – With its medieval architecture, world class museums and numerous internationally renowned cultural festivals, one of Ghent’s main forms of economy is tourism. Additionally, its port house several large companies including the car companies Volvo and Honda.
