International Removals to Spain from Europe
Ask any British national why they moved away from the UK’s shores to set up permanent residence in Spain, and you’ll likely hear a whole plethora of reasons.
The fantastic climate, the excellent food, fiestas, the relaxed lifestyle, beautiful architecture, world class culture, friendly people – these are just some of the hundreds of reasons that see many a UK citizen move to Spain, and the list can quite easily go on and on.
The people of Spain also enjoy one of the healthiest lifestyles in the world, living longer than anyone else in Europe, though many people suggest that this is primarily because Spanish residents are some of the happiest people living in Europe.
As an EU country, Spain does not require much from UK nationals who wish to set up permanent residence here, and as a result the process is relatively straightforward. On the other hand, UK nationals will still need to follow the correct procedures when registering their residence.
Unless you are moving to Spain as an employee, self-employed person, or student – in which case you will need to show proof as such – you will need to register for a residence card. Other people who will also need to register for a residence card include UK pensioners moving to Spain for retirement, and non-EU national dependents (such as a spouse from a non-EU country); they must apply for either a standard residence card, which will allow them to stay for a maximum of five years before it must subsequently be renewed, or a temporary residence card, which entitles them to stay for a maximum of one year.
UK nationals can apply for a residence card by submitting the appropriate application form to the Oficina de Extranjeros (Foreigners Office), which can also be obtained from there. It can also be submitted to the local provincial police station if necessary. The application form must be presented with your passport, a photocopy of the passport, and three passport photographs.
Full information concerning applying for permanent Spanish residence can be obtained by visiting the Spanish Ministry of the Interior website, here.
Spain has a vibrant community of British nationals who have taken the plunge to set up permanent residence in the country, and this can be seen in the various websites floating around the net that cater to such emigrants. Internations.org, Expatsinspain.co.uk and Spanishhabitat.com are all websites that cater to the British community in Spain but a simple search on Google will reveal many more.
