The History of Fox Moving and Storage
In May 2011, Fox celebrated its 40th year in the removals and storage business. From humble beginnings under the stewardship of Roy Fox’s Uncle Cecil back in the 1920s, Fox Moving & Storage has grown from a single location in South Wales to a nationwide network of offices over the last four decades.
Now providing moving and storage solutions throughout the UK, Europe and the World, Fox Moving & Storage is a modern-day powerhouse in the domestic and international removals business, employing more than 150 people in 10 different UK branches.
Here’s a timeline showing how Fox Moving & Storage has grown over the years...
1920 – Roy Fox’s Uncle Cecil begins a removals business in Newport, called C.A. Bailey. The company is eventually nationalised after WWII and becomes a branch of Pickfords. Cecil encourages his son Tony and nephew Roy Fox to join Pickfords as Trainee Managers in the 1950s
1971 – Originally called “Fox The Mover”, Fox attain their first ever vehicle, which goes to work in Cwmbran
1974 – Fox’s first storage warehouse is built, and becomes Wales’ first ever container store
1975 – Pilkington Fibre Glass Insulation Factory opens in Cwmbran. Fox appointed haulage contractor
1979 – Opening of head office, warehouse and garage facilities
1980 – Acquisition of Jones Motors, the Removals and Storage company
1980 – Acquisition of William Flay Removals, Cardiff
1981 – Fox The Mover becomes a founding member of Britannia Cooperative
1984 – Roy Fox elected President of The British Association of Removers (BAR)
1986 – Jays of Stourbridge merged into the Fox Group
1987 – Pantechnicon London, which was established in 1830, is acquired
1988 – First London warehouse is built
1988 – Construction of Cardiff Depot
1989 – Grand opening of Cardiff Depot
1990 – The Fox Group spreads its reach across the UK during the 90s, with different brand names operating in Warwickshire (Robinsons), Lancashire (Towlers), Lincolnshire (Briggs), Ascot (Sirls), and London (The Pantechnicon)
1994 – Opening of Windsor Depot
1999 – Acquisition of Perry Bros, Removals and Container Storage firm
2000 – Entire group rebranded as Fox Moving & Storage
2004 – Paul Fox elected President of The Bristish Association of Removers
2005-06 - Self-Storage facilities opened in Cardiff, Cwmbran and Stourbridge
2008 – Fox acquires removals business Vanpac International in Southampton, from US-based parent company Atlas World Group.
2011 – Official opening of Newport facility
